LCC Transformative Studio Art Program
The children in the “Art is Life; Life is Art” class are encouraged and guided to discover the power of their own creativity and the value of what that can teach them.
The ultimate intention of the art program is to teach and reveal that art is a gift that is latent in everyone and that it has the ability to transform our lives as well as the potential to transform the world we live in.
The formula of the mentoring art studio, along with the publication and exhibition of our children’s art, works on multiple levels .
In realizing the power of their imagination our children start to understand and activate problem solving skills, healthy expression, accountability, and responsibility.
The art program also develops the capacity for creative expression increasing their sense of personal identity and pride. As well as learning that art is a tool of expression and communication.
exhibition opportunities for their work as well as publication of their work, is validating their art and enhancing their self-esteem
It fosters socialization and inclusion in our classes and on field trips to museums, art galleries, artists' studios and community events.
It increases the public's understanding and awareness of the artistic and creative abilities of our children

Mentorship Evaluation
Jasmine
From: Lisa Rasmussen, the Art Teacher at LCC
I began this mentorship at the request of Jasmines social worker.
These our my observations thus far:
In my art room, Jasmines behavior is magical. She is an artist to the soul and very gifted. I have never seen her act out ever in the art room!! She is a hyper sensitive and creative soul, who has ended up in circumstances beyond her control. While creating she has the gift of intuition and spontaneity. She becomes immersed in the process as a whole. Also, on our outings she was an overly conscious young lady, she was totally aware of social protocol. Her enthusiasm and demeanor for the arts and culture made our outings really enjoyable and interesting.
Communication
On the outings when she wanted to leave a situation she communicated it eloquently. For example at the DeYoung Art Museum she said “ I am feeling sad, I just want to home.” I just want to be alone. “
Success
Jasmines artwork has been published three times and she has sold over four paintings.
Mentorship Plan
1. With her therapist we created guidelines for Jasmine to grow and awaken to being the arts community. Most importantly to use art as a vehicle to heal and express unsettling and toxic emotions.
2. The main component was that art was not to be taken away for punitive measures. Art was therapy and a space for Jasmine to be.
3. Outings would happen if Jasmine were in good for two days in her behavior we would have an opportunity to take a local outing. If she was in program for a week we could go on an outing to San Francisco.
The Challenge
There was no consistency with this mentorship. It did not exist. I saw Jasmine sporadically over the three months. We only went on three outings. In July, Jasmine did not think the mentorship was still going on.
Mainly, I did not see her because her staff holding her back for consequences, as well as in summer school they also went on weekly outings. I do know of two incidences were she was held back from the outings and prohibited from going to art.
It is the collective mentality at LCC that art is a reward. In many instances art class has been taken away by staff for punitive measures. Art is not seen as therapeutic, but a privilege. **This mind set is for all the clients at Lincoln. In turn when a client is in program, they are encouraged to have special art time with me. (one on one time)
Final Thoughts
Jasmine thrives in art. It seems to be a place were she feels safe and at home. I look forward to working with her in the future on a more consistent basis.

Vision
THE PROGRAM
The children who come to Lincoln Child Center, often abused and neglected, have lived through physical and emotional traumas that have taken their young lives in very different directions. Lincoln Child Center helps children between the ages of six and fourteen work through their emotional problems, recover from their painful experiences and learn how to build a foundation for a bright and successful future.
The Lincoln Child Center offers a comprehensive network of individualized but integrated therapy, counseling, and educational programs that work together on various levels for the benefit of children and their families.
In the LCC Transformative Studio Art Programs children are introduced to activities that ignite their imagination and their creative abilities. The children in the “Art is Life; Life is Art” class are encouraged and guided to discover the personal power of their own creativity and the value of what that can teach them. The ultimate intention of the art program is to teach and reveal that art is a gift that is latent in everyone and that it has the ability to transform our lives as well as the potential to transform the world we live in.
¨ In realizing the power of their imagination our children start to understand and activate problem solving skills, healthy expression, accountability, and responsibility.
¨ The ART room is a therapeutic space where children feel safe and supported to expand the boundaries of their creative processes.
THE NEED
Most of the children that attend LCC are marginalized and the mainstream society has no awareness of their existence or their state of being. What we are proposing to do with the funding from the Air Borne Teacher Fund is to create an exhibition called “Art Transforming Lives.” The exhibition would travel around the community to various public spaces including museums, hospitals, and centers of business to ignite awareness and understanding of the LCC population.
THE EXHIBITION AND ART PROGRAM
Building Bridges
¨ The public art exhibition would create awareness and understanding within the community about the situation of children in LCC.
¨ The work would be exhibited in the community and possibly published on cards for the further development of the art program.
The hope
¨ Cultivate self-reflection in the participating students.
¨ For the students to build self-esteem through their art being received in the community
¨ For the students to feel connected to the community at large

art pen pals
Here is a little about the project: LCC Art Happening --- Art Pen Pals I am starting a project called “Art Pen Pals” whereby artists (from JFK’s Department of Arts and Consciousness) will exchange art and writings (e.g., poetry, letters, stories, etc.) with children who live at Lincoln Child Center. The project will run from Feb 6th-May 11th 2007. Art/Letters will be exchanged bi-weekly. At the end of the project we will have a gathering where mentors and their art pen pals will meet. Partners will create an art book together consisting of artwork that the child will keep. The workshop will be on May 5th/11th at JFK’s Berkeley campus studio 1. The size of the artwork or written word should be smaller than 8” x 10”. I will serve as the liaison, and I will pick up the work at JFK to deliver to Lincoln. I will also collect the work from the kids and return it back to JFK. This is an exciting project with boundless potential. Namaste, Lisa Rasmussen

THE LCC ART PROGRAM
“Art is Life; Life is Art”
All creative activities in the art room can be applied to everyday use. Art and its process is cultivated as a transformative tool that our children can take with them where ever their lives lead them. Its daily function is to teach our clients to reduce stress, develop coping skills, cultivate empowerment, and to improve our student’s daily quality of life.
Lincoln Child Centers Art Program objectives are four-fold. It develops the capacity for creative expression in clients who have been traumatized and vulnerable, increasing their sense of personal identity and pride. It provides gallery space and other exhibition opportunities for their work, thereby validating their art, enhancing their self-esteem and providing them with earnings for their personal use. It fosters socialization and inclusion at Lincoln and on art galleries and community events. It increases the public's understanding of the artistic ability our children as well as introduces our clients to the concepts and ideas of making Art as a profession or a hobby when they become adults.
¨ In realizing the power of their imagination our children start to understand and activate problem solving skills, healthy expression, accountability, and responsibility.
¨ The ART room is a therapeutic space where children feel safe and supported to expand the boundaries of their creative processes.
